Building Services Authority (BSA)

Is a statutory authority established under the Queensland Building Services Authority Act 1991.

BSA's charter is to regulate the building industry through the licensing of contractors, educate consumers about their rights and obligations, make contractors aware of their legal rights and responsibilities, handle disputes fairly and equitably, protect consumers against loss through statutory insurance, implement and enforce legislative reforms and where necessary prosecute persons not complying with the law.

Sustainable Housing

The Sustainable Homes program is an initiative of the Queensland Government's and provides the industry and communities throughout Queensland with display homes which incorporate principles of sustainable design and performance utilising the Smart & Sustainable Homes Design Objectives.

From 1 May 2010, a 6-star energy or equivalent rating will become the minimum requirement for all new houses and townhouses (class 1 buildings) and enclosed garages (class 10a buildings) attached to a class 1 building in Queensland.

6-star energy equivalence rating requirement for houses and townhouses 

New houses and townhouses and major renovations to these buildings must achieve a minimum 6-star energy equivalence rating from 1 May 2010.

Water Saving Targets

Water savings targets will apply to approvals for new houses in the 24 councils using South East Queensland water reserves from 1 January 2007 and to new houses in the remainder of Queensland councils from 1 July 2007.

The amended Part 25 of the QDC replaces the existing Part 25 of the QDC from 1 January 2007 and requires Class 1 buildings connected to reticulated water supplies to meet water savings targets. Acceptable solutions for meeting the targets include the installation of rainwater tanks or use of dual reticulation, communal rainwater tanks and stormwater reuse measures.
